OCTOBER - HALLOWEEN TIME IS HERE !

One is never too old to celebrate Halloween !  Our friends,  Betty & Leonard, had a great party and yes, there was dress up !  Betty has a wonderful holiday spirit with decor to literally die for - witches are her favorite !
Speaking of witches, we had an entire weekend to celebrate "Witches & Warlocks" - our annual couples golf trip to the beach.  This was especially fun with lots of laughs and great fellowship.  Think back to the '60's and '70's and those fabulous college days when you loved just being with your friends?  Lots of laughs, games and a bit of alcohol but with early bedtimes and no hangovers-well that is our life as 60 year olds-plus or minus!!  So much fun....Thirty degree morning temperatures with slight drizzle and wind gusts did not dampen our spirit.  Friends can brighten the most dreary of days....and we did have dreary !!  See for yourself....

" THE BIG APPLE "

" Start spreading the news
I am leaving today
I want to be part of it
New York, New York..."
Four days of fun with girlfriends Betty, Darlene and Nan...a whirlwind of shopping, dining and the theater  - "The Book of Mormon" .....a reminder of how important friendship is.  Take time today to call a friend and just talk....email is not the same as a real conversation with friends.  I often forget this myself but I do enjoy the "girl talk" - hours on end of somethings and nothings.  Try it, you'll like it !

 PHOTOS TO ENJOY.......

AUTUMN SURPRISES !!

A before and after ( ABBA, that is)......Autumn always reminds me of the first day of school.  From first grade even into high school  much of my time in early autumn was spent selecting just the right ensemble, buying  papers and pens, selecting just the right backpack and/or school bag, covering my new books with decorative papers and on and on.  Oh, the good old days....when the most exciting autumn event was the day the new cars arrived in town at the Ford and Chevrolet dealerships.  The entire town arrived for the unveiling-literally-when cars actually took on a brand new shape each year !  And now...we recently spent a great deal of time and research deciding on a new car-SURPRISE- the 2012 models arrived without any fanfare and in many cases the dealerships are still waiting on the Japanese products that are stalled overseas indefinitely.  The same-but different-what still remained was the "new car smell" and the exhiliration of a "new ride".  AUTUMN HAS ARRIVED !!
Autumn brought a new energy to downtown-we have enjoyed "Rock The Block"- a two day celebration with music (jazz, country, beach, bluegrass, rock, etc.), food, vendors, etc. extolling the virtues of downtown...the Hispanic League's Fiesta 2012.....Winston Salem State University's homecoming parade (especially entertaining)...ArtsPalooza on Trade..."Havana Delirium" at the Stevens Center (although who knew the entire performance was in Spanish? - you were good sports, Leslie & David)..."The MadHatter's Ball" for the Adam Foundation (what a night !)...lunch and dinners out with friends....we love it all!  Included with all of the downtown activity were trips for mountain golf (one with girlfriends & one with the Pinnacle partners).

" ABBA , the Concert "

"..... you can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life...."
Duncan and I were fortunate to experience  " ABBA, the Concert "  with friends Jane and Paul Hendrick on September 24 (I note the date because I am inserting this entry before other August events)...anyway what made it so special was that we met a member of the troop before the concert for dinner.  Conrad, brother of Caroline-the Hendricks exchange student in the mid-90's- is a professional guitarist from Sweden and is a part of the tribute band that was finishing it's USA tour with a stop in Greensboro.  Please note that two of the original ABBA band members were part of the tour:  Mike Watson (bass guitar) and Janne Kling (saxophone and flute).   JUST FABULOUS !  " Name of the Game " is FUN !!!
"Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" a chance to chaffeur everyone in our new Hyundai Sante Fe....once we figured out the navigation system.  Arriving at the venue, there was some mixup with "will call" tickets (compliments of the band)-more on that later-but we did meet Conrad after his sound check-and had a lovely dinner at a local restaurant " 1618 West Seafood Grill " (we recommend)..."Money, Money, Money" but what else do you expect for atmosphere and great food?...worth every penny !    An "S.O.S" from the band-the opening time was moved up 30 minutes due to impending weather-so the key lime everyone had their heart set on had to wait !  "Take a Chance On Me " to get you there, Conrad !!
"Mamma Mia"  !!!!!     Thirty minutes to showtime-thank heavens for the navigation!  Conrad jumped out of the car but we still had not picked up the tickets.  "Super Trouper" Paul sprinted across the concourse to "will call" and yes, the tickets were there-we were front and center!  Jane and I are "Dancing Queen"s- up and moving to a great evening !  "Thank You For The Music "
ABBA fans, my tribute to the late 60's music and the current day revival through concerts, theater and movies !  Check out the photo montage-just like being there..........Enjoy !

" ENDINGS...BEGINNINGS "

The end of summer - the beginning of fall - where does the time go ?  Since last I blogged in addition to a seasonal change there are other happenings as well.  "Lite Fantastic" and Jimmy - the studio where Duncan and I dance and our instructor - celebrated 25 years !! He now begins the next 25....We have been a part of this for the last 12 years - a great time with new friends !  We also celebrated a special "beginning" with the Alm family in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Alms (Beth, Keith, Keith, Jr. and Michael) were our neighbors and friends when we first moved to Winston in the early '80's.  Keith2 married Beth2 (clever signatures for the newlyweds) and I have pictures!  http://gsmackeen.smugmug.com/Events/2011/The-Alm-Wedding/ .  Other neighbors (the Eglestons) were also there and a good time was had by all.  Such fun and joy is a wonderful reminder of how to begin and how to live life !  Sometimes I think we just go from day to day without truly appreciating the day we are in - I often find myself looking back or ahead instead of just enjoying the moment I am in.  A new resolution - make this the best day of my life !  Fall is a beginning - I resolve to start TODAY !

RELATIONSHIP RAMBLIN'S

NOTE:  Even if you decide you are not up to reading my "ramblin's" check out the photo gallery at www.gsmackeen.smugmug.com select Friends/2011/Summertime and ENJOY !

Now to get down to the serious stuff-relationships.  Have you ever dissected your friend timeline over the years?  What begins with childhood friends & family relationships quickly evolves to adult friendships that seem defined by your lifestyle.  In high school and college there are your peers who you hope to remain in contact with but often life and circumstances get in the way...distance is often the culprit-in the early '70's we did not have the internet!!  Your first job introduces you to co-workers who become your friends-common ground is important.  First marrieds congregate to first marrieds, then as parents you congregate with other parents-too often your children define that realm through sports teams, school activities-remember when you were identified as someone's mom?  You then  become an "empty nester" and again you are defined by those around you who again find themselves a twosome and then we become WHAT?  Later in life you seem to relate to your friends even though you may not have as much in common-the subject of parents, children, grandchildren, work, play remain constant.  I love to hear the stories of other friends and their grandchildren-it does not bore me-I find it entertaining.  Someday I  hope to be able to do the same.  Parallel lifestyles do not seem as important as I get older.  I remember the "first friends" and the newer friends-both share history, stories, good times, sorrows, losses - FRIENDS ARE THE FAMILY YOU CHOOSE.  I found this saying appropriate - strangely written on a bathroom wall-
"Be happy with what you have and you will have plenty to be happy about."
This is my newest "happy" thought.  My best to you and yours!
HAPPY SUMMER !

DOWNTOWN !!

Where to begin ?  Home again and on the road - never a moment wasted.  Time to enjoy the view, experience the music spend time with family and friends.  In no particular order, the past two months have been filled non-stop.  Visits from out of town friends and family ... Leslie spent weeks in D.C training and ended her trip with a brief visit in Winston-my Mom joined us as well as a quick visit from Blake-celebrating Leslie's birthday !  Lindsay, Heather & Chris (high school friends) joined us at the DASH baseball game where it proceeded to rain buckets-no game but still fun.  Golf at beach, the mountains, in Winston and then there is music from "Brother Josephus and the Love Revolution", to "Westend Mambo" to the "Holy Ghost Revival", then the Heavy Rebel Weekender with a great car show and mud wrestling.  A great weekend with Yates-afternoon visit to a local winery that was charming -Sanders Ridge.  Indeed there is something for everyone !  WE LOVE DOWNTOWN !
Check out photos - the car show is worth the effort !!  www.gsmackeen.smugmug.com , select Events/2011/Summer in Downtown

" UP, UP & AWAY !! "

Thirty hours, four airline meals and one Ambien later...
we arrived in Amman, Jordan !!
Although not the original travel plan ( Mutual of Omaha opted to cancel a trip to Istanbul, Turkey due to security risks related to Bin Laden's death) - we were not to be deterred...traveled to Amman, Jordan direct from USA instead via Turkey to visit Leslie-still posted with USAID there.  Ten wonderful days spent exploring the country and spending time with Leslie and her friends.

THURSDAY:  Strangely during our 2010 visit the US Embassy was having their annual wine tasting and again we arrived in time to  attend the 2011 affair- elegant foods, wines, music,  dancing-an evening just made for us!  Jet lag did not deter a good time, although the wine did seem seem to have an unusually "quick" kick;  thirty hours of travel door to door with minimal sleep could have added to this circumstance as well.

FRIDAY:  Revived by  morning we were up and ready to go...first to brunch at a very nice cafe then to a summer market that was celebrating it's opening day.  The market is only open on Fridays and was originally a project initiated by USAID with the purpose to encourage Jordanian merchants and artisans to sell their wares and foodstuffs.  The best options were several young women with interesting jewelry items and an artist that painted on glass and then made into trays, mugs, dishes, etc.  An innovative group of young men -who were searching for a restaurant name- were making flateers-extremely thin pastry layered with vegetable and meat options, folded and baked at extremely high heat for just a few minutes-delicious!  Could easily be the "Next Great American Restaurant".

Leslie was officially assigned her first USAID project in April after completing required training over the last year.  The initiative is to encourage gender acceptance and family planning in the country.  To this end John Hopkins is working in the country via a grant to achieve this purpose-this is one of Leslie's managerial assignments.  As it happened in Irbid, Jordan (about one hour north of Amman) the project was sponsoring a festival- "My Life Is Beautiful" -which we attended.  The Embassy driver picked us up late afternoon and we arrived in time for the entertainment.  Over 2, 000 people attended - a great success.  Highlights of the event included a popular comedy team - Ra'el & Khadra, Ma'an - traditional folk dancers, break dancers from Amman and the star of the evening Hussain Al Salman-nationally known pop singer who was originally from this region.   An aside, the Muslim clerics had just approved a declaration accepting the tenants of Leslie's project which is a huge step in the right direction for public health in Jordan.

SATURDAY :  Just one of the best days !  We along with a group of Leslie's friends travelled north (again) to the St. George vineyards-the passion of "The Winemaker" Omar Zumot.  Omar funded his venture with business acumen - wholesaling Lays and Hershey products to the whole of Jordan.  In spitting distance of Syria, Omar grows his grapes (34 varieties) on 1250 acres with two smaller vineyards  south of Amman.  His wines are totally organic and it was very interesting to hear of the process as we toured the guest house and grounds.  The afternoon was spent tasting wines along with a lovely barbecue-just grand.  The photo gallery (noted at end of blog) tells the story.  Our cast of characters (many who repeat with other festivities during our stay) include charming, witty, interesting friends that Leslie has met on this post.
Amy  (Canada) working in Amman with an educational foundation
Karin (Sweden) an engineer with SWECO managing water projects
Catherine (French Canadian) works in Canadian Embassy
Nina (USA) works as a technician with Syntax
Catherine (USA) working with ENDEAVOR in entrepreneurship
Ayman (Jordan) former Iraq contractor
Kai (Norway) works with the United Nations
Mo (USA) studying Arabic in Jordan
Guests of Catherine were Isabelle, Patrick & Baby Patrick from Abu Dhabi
You would think Duncan and I would know better but with age does not necessarily come wisdom !  Continued the party at Karin's late into the night with more wine, food, singing and dancing.  Did I mention the hookah?  Smoking a water pipe filled with fruit flavored tobaccos is quite a social event in Jordan-you can even order delivery as well as many bars devoted to this social event.  Quite pleasant flavors ie watermelon/mint, lemon/mint, double apple and the list goes on.  Pleasantly surprised to find country songs were a favorite of the group !  You don't have to be from the country to enjoy country !

SUNDAY:  First day of the work week so Duncan and I were on our own for the day.  Our driver, Husan , ferried us to museums, shopping malls, the grocery store and then a special late afternoon visit with Omar at his wine shop.  What a treat to hear first hand his history, the vision for his wine making and the excitement of actually being able to succeed with vineyards in such a dry, hot climate.  The key is the disparity in day and evening temperatures allowing the grapes to develop their sugars;  from his original tests of 34 varieties he has yet to find a grape that does not perform.  Amazing!

MONDAY:  Off early for the drive to Petra, south of Amman. In the 1950's  this site was unearthed-one of the earliest known farming communities in the Middle East.  Only 5% has been excavated but is a spectacular city honed from rose rock.  Although we had visited with Leslie in 2010, our mission this trip was to go further up into the mountains to see the Monastery- a Nabataean tomb built to King Obodas around 96 B.C.  and views that overlooked the entire region.  Since there were 800 steep steps to achieve our goal, we opted to take a carriage ride into the base -imagine riding over cobblestones in a horse drawn carriage- bumpy does not describe the thirty minute ride.  Once there we then chose a donkey to scale us up the 800 steps-perilous is the adjective since many areas were quite narrow.  Once on top, I suggested we actually walk down-no more donkey for me.  The incredible facades on the mountains and the views were worth it all. We spent our evening in Biet Zaman, a Bedouin style hotel in Petra and rested well.
TUESDAY:  Off again, this time to Wadi Rum-a series of valleys setin a desert landscape of sand and rock, punctuated bybtowering jebels.  We channeled our inner "Lawrence of Arabia"  (T. E. Lawrence  from the   20th century)- lived here and  the movie was filmed in the area as well.  The Bedouin guide was quite entertaining.  Duncan and I sat on benches in the back of his truck while he skirted around the rocks and sand dunes.  With limited English he was able to echo to fellow Bedouins our names;  he also prepared a campfire and served Bedouin tea (served hot, very sweet with sage)- delicious.  We relaxed in the shade of a rock before heading back to Amman.  Arriving past dinner time, we opted to go out to a wonderful Middle Eastern restaurant before once again collapsing into bed.

WEDNESDAY:  A group of nine are joining us for dinner tonight at Leslie's apartment.  Spent some of the day in the kitchen preparing "Southern"- fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, marinated green beans & tomatoes,  hush puppies and brownies.  I guess a sign of success is that there was no food left at the end of the evening!  Hush puppies were quite the novelty-cooking lessons on the "art" ensure that the hush puppy will travel well all over the world. Great time again, with the addition of Andrew ( USA) to the group.
THURSDAY:  We were to leave for Jerusalem today but due to security issues, Leslie did not get approved for travel to Israel.  Making the best of it all, we spent the day in Umm Qais (Gadara where the scriptures say that Jesus cast out demons into the herd of pigs) north of Amman close to Irbid where we had attended the festival.  Leslie decided to work and save her vacation day.  So very serene and beautiful.  To our left from the hill we could see Israel, to the front was the Sea of Galilee, the Golan Heights and then to the right we could see Syria.  We had lunch at a charming rest house at the top surrounded by sun, flowers and cool breezes.

FRIDAY:  An easy day with Leslie.  She treated me to a mani-pedi, lunch at the market and shopping .  We met Nina and Kai for dinner and had a wonderful evening with them.

SATURDAY:  Brunch, shopping and a visit from Catherine (USA) before we headed out to airport-  winding down a wonderful visit.
SUNDAY:  Yes, another thirty hour trip-some delays out of New York to Raleigh-but we are home!!

Have 10 minutes?
The photo gallery is extensive but is a treasure from our travels.
Many photos captioned...enjoy !

Thanks, girlfriends for the official "first party"...
Yes, the men were here as well, just not in the photo spirit !

TIARAS & TEE TIMES !!

WOW !  I was fortunate to share the "Royal Wedding" with my good friend Bonnie-we were at the beach condo for the weekend while our "men" played in the Surf Club's Member Guest.  We were up at five to savor every moment with tiaras and mimosas.  The dress-the pomp-the circumstance-the kiss-I loved every moment......almost makes one want to be British ! They do know how to celebrate a wedding!

On to the men-they won their flight and in the one hole shootout (#18 for those who know the course) Duncan was the only player out of ten to hit the green!  Very exciting-ended in a three way tie and on second playoff of same hole had to beat out a shot that was six inches from the hole on the approach-not meant to be-but did come in second in the field of sixty teams.  Congratulations to Will & Catherine and also Duncan &  Lindsay - our golf royalty!

THE TIMES THEY ARE A'CHANGING....

How can it be ?  "All My Children"  off the air?  I watched the first episode in college and have been a fan ever since...still watching it once a week - all it takes to keep up.  Speaking of change we have moved...
NEW ADDRESS:
ONE PARK VISTA #440, WINSTON-SALEM, NC 27101
Moved on the 13th and final picture hung on the 19th..who could believe that Duncan is as OCD as I ?  Feverishly unpacking for three straight days then the small details to follow.  The move created quite a set of circumstances...imagine a condo full of boxes with no idea where to find a knife or fork or dish? Hor douvres served on the base of a patio pot.  Cut the frozen pizza with a pair of scissors then served on the pizza box-have not found dishes yet.  Marie Callendar became our close friend while trying to find pots and pans.  We are home !  Formal dinner at our dining table on Sunday evening then this week dinner each night on porch overlooking the greenway...watching the dog walkers as well as the homeless man who charges his cell phone on city property - go figure ?  Also a great day at Cobblestone Farmer's Market (a short walk) and met such nice people...I highly recommend the experience for great locally grown foods.  So far so good...the times they are a'changing !!

An aside:  additional pictures of a Black Tie dance with friends and watching our first parade from our condo-the Budweiser Clydesdales.
Little known facts:   Each horse weighs 2,000 pounds, eats 60 pounds of hay & 15 pounds of grain daily and drinks 30 gallons of water a day.

FROM THE COUNTRY....TO THE BIG APPLE !!

April has started with a "BANG" -You are never too old....we joined the "youngsters" for a concert by the Zac Brown Band-yes, I am a member of the "Zamily"...had a grand evening with Prudy & Tom Yates at the "Joel"-the local coliseum.  We had a tailgate with "chicken fried" and a little alcohol then a great evening of music.  Love that band...hope everyone will take a moment to tune into a local country station-on my truck's speed dial- (my favorite 93.1 The Wolf) - you will be ZAMMED !

Then on to the Big Apple with Gail & Jim Bland for a great weekend !  We started out in Raleigh at "49th Street Oyster Bar" - a historic NC establishment - and continued to eat our way through the rest of the weekend from "Carnegie's Deli" for Saturday lunch, "Latanza" for Saturday dinner, "Saju Bistro" for Sunday brunch and then "Top of the Standard" with views from New Jersey to Manhattan followed by "The Standard Grill" for Sunday dinner ( we upped the average age-very young & hip-just like the four of us !!)  I list the specifics in case you travel north-I recommend them all.

Loved the matinees "Jersey Boys" and "Million Dollar Quartet" plus a great Sunday morning at the Metropolitan Museum of Art...walked six plus miles on Saturday and then a little less than three on Sunday....great way to enjoy the city!  Saturday afternoon was the "Scottish Parade"- we were unfortunately at the theater - but were lucky enough to enjoy a sidewalk serenade Saturday night...kilts, bagpipers & all in Times Square.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art was a great way to spend our Sunday morning-wandered, toured, loved it !

Returned home Monday morning - car service arrived in a stretch limo for trip to airport - love the unexpected !

" BIRDS OF A FEATHER...."

"....Better to have a long-neck perspective, alive to every possibility.
Sure of blue skies overhead, where the sun is always shining and visible to the eye."
(Collected poems of  Philip Martz)

The ninth annual MAC-MAR Invitational was successful but not without challenges !  To review- my good friend Betty and I host girlfriends each year at the beach for fellowship, golf and a general good time.  It was all that and more....2011 was the first time the weather did not cooperate.  Blustery winds, cold and rain are not ideal conditions for a spring getaway at the beach but some sunshine and positive attitudes by all made for another great event.  The picture gallery says it all...(keep in mind that our theme is a flamingo - a symbol of friendship - so there is always a lot of PINK !! )  Enjoy !

" HOW 'BOUT A LITTLE MORE....? "

How 'bout a little more sunshine, blue skies and rainbows?  What a winter-  but now can celebrate the beginning of spring - yes, it is official.  2011 has been a hectic year so far but am hoping for the days to settle down and life to normalize.  Since last I posted Leslie has returned to Amman, Jordan (end of February) but what a grand time it was while she was here for five weeks.  Although in and out of town, was fun to just have her in  the USA.  Eventually I did realize that she mangaes quite well on her own without me to furnish her with daily reminders-as she often pointed out   in the waning days of her stay!  Adult child or not, it is the "mothering" that makes me part of who I am....

Speaking of which....How 'bout a little more "TLC" ?  Blake had ACL surgery in early March and for days I was able to "mother" but eventually even he could manage to hobble around on his own and I went my merry way.  I like to still feel needed by spouse, child, family, friends.....who of us doesn't ?  That is part of what makes us human.  Although  I admit that after a time, everyone needs their own space.

How 'bout a little more of this and a lot of that?  A week with my Mom in Savannah mid March reminded me that in many ways I am becoming her SEE ABOVE !!-she (along with her sister - my Aunt Mark- and Genia - Aunt Mark's daughter-in-law)  had a brief three days in Savannah, Georgia (I had never been and it is my new favorite city !)  We did take our time but did manage several tours, shops, eateries, etc.  When all was said and done Genia and I did agree that we could have taken them most anywhere and they would have had a good time -the fellowship of family is what means the most.
My latest project-storing my photos online...is a work in progress.  I do have the Savannah trip available (other galleries are in the process of "tweaking") but you might enjoy Savannah-spring had already bloomed there !   www.gsmackeen.smugmug.com  The Savannah trip is filed in TRAVEL/2011/MARCH IN SAVANNAH....keep clicking and you will get to the slide show.

How 'bout a little more dancing?  Celebrated St. Patrick's Day with dancing friends-so much fun.  The Wares did a grand job hosting a great party.  Everyone should dance-at least once a week if not more !

How 'bout a little more stuff?  NO THANK YOU !  Do we really need a lot?  As I pack for the move downtown, I realize that when you have one box to store and one box to move - OF THE SAME THING - it is time to say enough !

How 'bout a little more time?  In the end - with children, mothers, spouse, family, friends - that is what makes me smile.  I am often in too much of a hurry to "get things done" that I lose sight of the joy of just being and being with others.  Sometimes even the time by myself is taken for granted.  I hope to settle in to 2011 and a kinder, gentler pace over the next few months and enjoy !!  The same to you....

WEBSTER'S WORDS.....

HOMECOMING (n.,adj.)  n. the act of coming or returning home
Leslie left for Amman, Jordan in early January 2010-her homecoming was almost a year later.  She returned on R & R from her post with USAID  for a mix of business and fun.  She will be returning to Jordan in late February - but for now - has been great to have her home.  Having fun catching up with friends & family  !
CELEBRATION (n.) special services or activities in honor of a particular man, act, time, or day
Although officially 90 on December 27, 2010, my Mom celebrated January 30th with a lovely reception in the church fellowship hall hosted by the family-everyone was there.  Lots of family and friends dropped by for a true "Southern" reception.
FRENZY (n.) near madness; frantic condition; mental derangement
The week after the celebration Leslie, my Mom and me (Duncan came mid-week) spent  time at the beach condo in North Myrtle Beach.  Many days were spent in a shopping "frenzy"-keeping in mind that Leslie's shopping options are limited abroad - we made up for a year of "limitations"...the economy is back ! ...at least temporarily.
REUNION (n.) the act or process of coming together again
One last "defining" moment.....FORTY SIX YEARS !  A reunion of my high school cheerleading squad (North Johnston Panthers) was amazing.  After all of those years (not having seen most at any time since the late 60's), we were able to pick up where we left off.  Lots of gossip, catching up, etc. just like a group of 16 year olds !

Mixed in with all of these events, I actually celebrated my birthday-62 years ! ...which makes it also the two year anniversary of my blog...hope you have enjoyed-I will go on-no Webster word for that !

CELEBRATING 90 !!

Family and friends enjoyed a wonderful day celebrating my Mom's 90th birthday. Lots of cameos if you right click on picture to view the online album. Hope you enjoy !

JUST WORDS - "WITH HARMONY"

One of my favorite times of year - second only to spring - is the month of January.  After arduously putting away Christmas, I am left with a clean slate.  Generally there are no meetings, no appointments, no "nothing that has to be done" , just time and more time.  This January has been assisted with a lot of the white stuff that made it easier to just say "I think I will stay in today and do nothing".  I do actually recognize that I am obsessive-compulsive on projects, organizing, etc. (that is my normal)  so when I say "nothing" I mean only the important stuff like cleaning out closets, organizing the ninth annual MAC-MAR Invitational (late March), planning my Mom's 90th birthday celebration (January 30th) as well as a spring trip to New York, a visit from Leslie (she arrives January 21) and on and on and on...... Specific thoughts.......
*In 2005 we downsized for what we thought would be the final time.  The new challenge for downtown condo living is to downsize even more.  The hardest part is the "favorite stuff" that includes my collection of Santas, nutcrackers, perfume bottles, etc. etc.  "Easing" into this phenomenon has been helped with the realtor commenting that although lovely, could I please declutter?  One person's clutter is my treasure-staging a home is different than living in it as I keep reminding myself.
*The early 70's was the first time I had ever heard of Bette Midler;  my hairdresser would rave on and on about her so out of curiosity I bought albums and then CD's.  Besides a wonderful songstress, she is a great entertainer-truly the "Divine Ms. M".  In 1978 when far from home (Texas) and learning to mother (Leslie as a baby) I would often sit in a rocking chair near the TV while feeding her in the wee hours of the morning.  Midler had a revue that was often shown on TV and I would be thrilled to find it during these early morning hours.  "Beaches" is one of my favorite movies and her music always makes me smile.  Get the picture?  In 1999 Duncan surprised me with front row seats to her performance in Washington, DC- just fabulous. To make a long story even longer, HBO is currently showing her Las Vegas revue "The Showgirl Must Go On"-in total delight I watched last evening and have saved to play again-the wonders of a DVR.  Such a small thing but so delightful.  It makes me smile just to think about it taking me back all the way to 1978.
*My Saturday was a day with no plan so I headed out and just popped in any store that looked interesting.  As efficient a tool as Google is there is something about actually touching and feeling an object-much like reading a book or newspaper and being able to turn pages-that gives me great pleasure.  It is surprising that with no list you can still find stuff you really "need"...I spent several minutes reviewing a selection of spoon rests before selecting the perfect one-maybe I should start a collection?-oh yeah I am downsizing !  Hard to believe I have actually been able to live without one for all of these "almost" 62 years.  Who knew?  Picked up a little thing here and a bigger thing there and when I finally arrived at Home Goods which always has something "I can't live without" I walked out and left the lavender sachets on the shelf-what was I thinking?  Maybe next time.....
*Dessert is the most important food group. I would rather go without meals and save the calories for "sweets".  I acknowledge this craving and often can plan a whole day around what, when and where I can enjoy the sugar rush.  TODAY HAD ICE CREAM FOR MY FIRST MEAL-DELIGHTFUL !
*The Miss America Pageant celebrated 90 years last evening by crowning one of the youngest (17) winners ever-I grew up watching every year in hopes that I would be crowned-actually only in my dreams.  Is is too late for Mrs. Senior America?
If you are still with me after these ramblings, just wanted to chat before February-MY BIRTHDAY MONTH.  The next post will be jammed with lots and lots of pictures from my Mom's birthday to Leslie's visit to other stuff I am sure.  As for now is JUST WORDS...."WITH HARMONY" !  Enjoy January-it can really be a great start to a great year-make it so !  Eat dessert FIRST !

It is indeed the first day of 2011 and I remain at my computer trying to be clever and creative-it may not be my day!  Where is the inspiration, the repartee, the "words of wisdom" ?   Maybe it is just another day but NO !....actually it is a beginning -another year - more adventures, more memories, more time with family and friends.  How lucky for me !  I look forward to the possibilities, the opportunities-THE BEST YEAR EVER !   2010 was pretty good as well- I finished the year with a flourish- a Secret Santa evening with friends, dancing the night away at Lite Fantastic, the theater for a musical Christmas review "Winter Wonderettes" with the Blands,  special dinners with the Yates & Curries, home to Kenly with family and ringing in the new year with a "Rocking New Year's Eve" dinner dance at Lite Fantastic.  Duncan & I are anticipating our move to downtown although the move is dependent on our current house selling.  We often go downtown to the movies and dinner-we love it !  Work is still ongoing to finish the condo so we have several months before we could even actually move.  Again, will keep you posted on our progress.
Keep in touch-I enjoy your emails .  Let me know how and what you are doing.....May 2011 be your BEST YEAR EVER  as well.  A great resolution-enjoy every moment and take nothing for granted.  (I knew there was some wisdom to share !)
